Race director Michael Masi has been the target of criticism since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The decisions he made in the final stages of the race are not universally appreciated. Max Verstappen stands up for Masi.
In conversation with the BBC The Dutchman said that he sympathises with the race director. Fans, as well as well known figures from Formula 1, strongly criticise Masi for his approach and inconsistent decisions this season.
"People say maybe he needs help. Yeah, fair point. Everyone needs help. I need help as well", says Verstappen.
Masi has a tough job
According to many, Masi could have acted more fairly, for example by giving a red flag after Nicholas Latifi's crash. This would have also given Lewis Hamilton the chance to fight against Verstappen on softer tyres. However, the singular world champion stresses that Masi has a tough job.
"Michael is a nice guy and he tries his very best and it's very unfair to now start hating on him because it is a very tough job", Verstappen has also been penalised several times by the FIA this season, but has understanding and respect for the race director and the FIA.
