Gasly grabs fastest time, but: 'Don't put the focus on the timing screens'

The first F1 test day in Bahrain is over and one there is a surprising name at the top of the timesheet. Pierre Gasly drove the fastest time of the day with his AlphaTauri. The Frenchman himself is not as impressed as you may think, opting to highlight the negatives.
The Frenchman drove a 1:33:902 on the softest tyre and was a scant half second faster than number two Carlos Sainz. Sainz and teammate Charles Leclerc, who took places two and three in the timesheet, did set their times on a harder compound. Gasly is therefore not so impressed with his own fastest time today. As most people know, winter testing is all about gathering data. In short, kilometers are more important than speed.
Gasly sees room for improvement
With 557,436 KMs, which is good for 103 laps, Gasly is not doing badly. The Frenchman is nevertheless not as impressed: "It's good to end the day in P1", the driver noted in the team's official press release. "But we are always questioned during tests about how we are doing. I think we have to focus on our own results, not on the timing screens. That doesn't mean so much yet until qualifying next week."
Gasly is happy with the fastest time, but says that as a driver, you always focus on the negative; on what can be improved. With that, he emphasizes that there is simply too much work to do to make statements about how they stand. Tomorrow, the Frenchman will have to make way for teammate Yuki Tsunoda. Gasly will then have time to work with the engineers on the AT03. Although the times indeed do not say much, it is striking that Ferrari was at the top of the timesheet on all four test days so far. Gasly also did not stay a day far behind the competition. This may of course have to do with the specific schedule that the drivers and teams are working on.
