Max Verstappen trumped Charles Leclerc in the final stages of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix and is to be congratulated, but even after his successful overtaking, it remained exciting until the finish line.

"Of course, we were a little bit lucky with that safety car, which took us from P3 to P2," Verstappen begins in conversation with Viaplay. While stressing that he is sorry for Sergio Perez, who initially had a good chance at victory, Perez interrupts the interview to congratulate his teammate.

Verstappen trumped Leclerc in final stage of race

After exchanging some words with his teammate, the Dutchman continues the conversation. He notes that the speed was good after the safety car, after which he caught up with Charles Leclerc. "I saw that he was really pushing in the fast corners, so I tried to keep a bit of the energy out and save my tires," Verstappen explained.

After the virtual safety car in the final stages of the race, the Red Bull Racing driver noticed that Leclerc was having problems with his tyres. "Then I had a few chances to attack, but he played it smart in the last corner," he continued.

"They have a very aggressive attack mode. That makes it very difficult to estimate how to overtake them in the end with DRS," explained Verstappen, who could not rest on his laurels even after his successful overtaking of Leclerc. "After that it remained very exciting, because he stayed in the DRS the whole time, but in the end we got him over the line and so we are finally on our way this season," said the reigning world champion.
