Gerhard Berger is only too happy that his former team Ferrari is back on the winning side. According to the Austrian, it is essential that the Scuderia can fight for titles.

Ferrari is having a particularly strong start with two wins and a total of five podiums in three Grands Prix. Since the hybrid era, the Italian team has not had such a good start and consequently leads the constructors' championship and the drivers' standings with Charles Leclerc.

Losing Ferrari bad for F1

Berger, who drove for Ferrari from 1987 to 1989 and 1993 to 1995, is happy to see his former team regain success after several lean years. "Ferrari is the heart of Formula 1," the Austrian is quoted as saying by NextGen-Auto.com.

In 2020 and 2021 the Scuderia had two very bad years, especially in 2020 Ferrari underperformed. Something that is bad for Formula 1 as a whole according to Berger. "Seeing Ferrari win is very important for Formula 1 as a brand," he says.

Berger hopes for fight between three teams

Currently, Red Bull Racing seems to be the only team that can attack Ferrari, but the Austrian formation is still struggling with reliability issues. Despite those problems, Berger is enjoying the fight between the two teams and hopes that Mercedes can enter the fight soon.
