Pierre Gasly could become Lewis Hamilton's successor at Mercedes. That's what Mirror journalist Daniel Moxon thinks. Currently, the Frenchman is still under contract with AlphaTauri.

Last Tuesday, news came out that Sergio Perez has signed a new deal at Red Bull Racing through 2024. This immediately means for Gasly that there will be no place for him at the top team.

Gasly is wanted in the paddock

Meanwhile, rumours are already circulating that Hamilton may well hang up his helmet after 2022. This would mean that a spot would become available at Mercedes, which could then be filled by Gasly. "But if the Silver Arrows decided to offer the Frenchman his second chance at a top team, it would be harsh of the Red Bull group to deny him that opportunity," Moxon writes for The Mirror.

If Mercedes doesn't become it, McLaren would have a good chance of taking over Gasly. Currently, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo drive for that team, but the latter cannot find his feet and his future at the team seems far from certain.

Slow start to 2022

Gasly himself has not had a great start to 2022. With only six points, the one-time race winner is in fourteenth place in the championship. That still puts him behind teammate Yuki Tsunoda, who has racked up eleven points.
