A few weeks ago, Sebastian Vettel indicated that he was seriously considering his future in Formula 1. He also hinted that he no longer saw a long future for himself in the premier class of motor sport. On Instagram, the Aston Martin driver has just announced that he will retire from racing in 2023.

Vettel quits Formula 1

A great F1 era is coming to an end with the retirement of four-time world champion Vettel. The German, who became the youngest ever F1 champion with Red Bull Racing and won no fewer than four titles in a row with the team, will retire from Formula 1 after 2022. His last years with Aston Martin were his farewell. Vettel no longer drove himself into the spotlight and has decided that there is no future for him in either the team or the sport.

Indeed, a fortnight ago the driver indicated that he was considering how realistic his goals are and how much energy he still has for the sport. In a video, Vettel said: "I hereby announce my retirement with effect from 2023." The reasons? "I love this sport. For as long as I can remember. But as much as I live for the circuit, there is also life off the track. Being a racing driver has never been my full identity. I believe more in our identity and how we treat others than in what we do. Who am I? I am Sebastian, father of three and husband to a wonderful woman"

Vettel's message fits with how we have seen and heard him in the paddock over the past year. The driver was clearly shifting his focus to things other than car racing and has now chosen to leave Formula 1 behind.
