Vettel has already found a replacement: 'Am not entirely neutral'

Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement on the Thursday before the Hungarian Grand Prix. After 2022 he will no longer be seen on the Formula 1 grid. This leaves a spot vacant at Aston Martin and the German himself already has someone in mind to take his seat.

Vettel's replacement

Vettel will stop racing in Formula 1 at the end of 2022. He announced this on Thursday in a video, in which he tells that it is time for him to spend more time with his family. For Aston Martin this means that they have to look for a suitable replacement. A difficult task, because a four-time Formula 1 World Champion is not easily replaced.

Vettel himself puts forward Mick Schumacher as the ideal replacement. In conversation with the German Bild The 35-year-old driver said he has already spoken to team owner Lawrence Stroll. "I have a very high opinion of Mick. I am not completely neutral because I am very close to him, but he is a good driver and a fast learner," Vettel said of the 23-year-old Haas F1 driver.

Schumacher leaves option open

Schumacher responded to the same medium, saying that a departure at Haas is not impossible. "We still have a lot to do at Haas, my focus is here. We will see what the future brings." When asked if he could imagine driving at Aston Martin in 2023, Schumi Jr. responds: "Never say never..."
