After a difficult start to the season, in which podiums were only achieved when Red Bull Racing or Ferrari had problems, Mercedes now seem to be back in the battle for the podiums. According to George Russell, the team must continue to work on the current car concept in order to move even further forward.

Mercedes must stick to W13 concept

Too little speed and too much bounce. That's how 2022 started for Mercedes. The German team was the clear third team on the grid when the ten teams started the first race in Bahrain. Now, after the GP of Hungary, Mercedes finally seems to have really found the connection with Red Bull and Ferrari. There was talk a few weeks ago of possibly changing the concept of the car, but according to Russell, this could only work against them.

"I don't think changing car concept is going to make us go any faster, maybe the contrary to be honest. Sometimes you just got to stick to the process and keep on pushing. And that's difficult to do when you're off the pace and things don't seem to be going your way," Russell said at the FIA press conference after the race.

From one minute to ten seconds

According to the young Briton, Mercedes has already made significant progress in 2022. "I think at the start of the season we were finishing races a minute behind first position. The last two races we’ve been within 10 seconds so I think it's definitely going in the right direction," concludes Russell. Lewis Hamilton has nothing to add to his teammate's story.
