Carlos Sainz struggled to get going in 2022 after an excellent first season with Ferrari, but he worked hard and took his first victory at Silverstone. He acknowledged it has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but despite lagging behind Max Verstappen, the Spaniard still sees a possibility of winning the championship.

Sainz is now just 22 points behind teammate Charles Leclerc, but he is not the only one with his sights set on second place in the championship. The Ferrari duo are joined by Sergio Perez and George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton just ten points behind the Spaniard.

Sainz not losing sight of Verstappen

From P2 to P6 it is very close, but the championship leader Verstappen has built up a huge lead. Still, Sainz is not losing sight of his former teammate. "Statistically, anything is possible. That’s why my intention hasn’t changed," the Ferrari driver said in conversation with Formula1.com. "I still go into every weekend trying to win the race."

He continued: "It's a crazy year we are doing. There are a lot of points swings, which makes me believe everything is possible." Because the season is so different from previous years and there are more unexpected twists and turns during races, Sainz continues to believe it is possible to clinch the title.
