It seemed as though Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes were on course for their first victory of the season in the Netherlands, but a late Safety Car saw an end to his and the team's hopes.

Hamilton livid

Once the Safety Car was deployed, Max Verstappen immediately jumped into the pits to put on a set of soft tyres. Both Mercedes were instructed to stay out to take the lead, with the intention of using Russell as a rear-gunner for Hamilton in front and to fight for the win.

However, this wasn't the case with Russell making the call to pit for the soft tyres a lap later, leaving Hamilton out to dry in the lead on old tyres.

Once the race was restarted, there was nothing Hamilton could do. Verstappen immediately swooped around the outside of the Mercedes to take the lead into turn one. A few laps later, it was Hamilton's own teammate passing him on the softer tyre.

"I can't believe you guys f****** me, can't tell you know ****** I am." The seven-time World Champion yelled over the radio. "That was the biggest f*** up."

In the end, Hamilton didn't even finish on the podium as the Ferrari of Leclerc picked him off for third place.
