Ferrari has been catching up in recent years. Whereas in 2020 it was still competing in the middle of the world championship, this season it is again showing that it can compete for wins. Mattia Binotto tells Sky Sports in an interview that there are still plenty of steps it can take.
With Charles Leclerc out of the first three race weekends, the Italian stable managed to win no less than two Grands Prix. Expectations were therefore high for the rest of the season, but the team failed to maintain that form.
"If we look at the current season, we know there are still steps which are required to be in the position to win a championship," Binotto told us honestly. "Ferrari has done an enormous development from last season to this one. You need to look back many years to see such a big development."
Binotto points to Ferrari's reliability
According to Binotto, it is clear which parts Ferrari still needs to work on. Not only did the formation fail several times in setting its race strategy, the team boss also sees that the Italians need to improve on reliability.
"The reliability cost us at least a couple of victories and in order to win championships you need to reliable," Binotto said. "I think during the race weekend you may always do mistakes. I think being perfect is almost impossible, you need to take decision on the pit wall, but we need to be the best."
