Max Verstappen was three tenths faster than runner-up George Russell in qualifying, but the Red Bull Racing driver had to work a lot harder for it than the final result suggests. Russell was incredibly fast in his final run, but had to abort his very fast lap in the final sector which may have been Verstappen's luck. In any case, Max is happy with his first pole in Mexico.

"It was a good qualifying. It was a close one, but after FP3, we made a few adjustments on the car, and got into a better rhythm. To be on pole here is of course amazing. It's a very long run to turn 1, so we do need a good start.

The 25-year-old Dutchman went on to say that driving through the stadium section in the third sector is incredibly fun. "It's great, the passion from the fans is incredible. It's great to drive here." Verstappen then has a message for all Mexican supporters:"Checo will be there tomorrow, we have a fast race car. I hope it will be a fun race with a lot of action." Perez will have to start the race from P4.

Battle with Mercedes

Already Verstappen managed to win three times in Mexico, adding number four will not be easy. Mercedes looks to be in good shape this weekend. "It will be close. They normally have a good race pace as well, it depends on what we can do with the strategy. We will look at that tonight," he concluded.
