Fernando Alonso has high hopes for his new employer. According to the Spaniard, Aston Martin is capable of beating Alpine in 2023 and is even looking at a possible third world title.

Alonso is considered one of the best drivers in Formula 1, but his career has also been marked by wrong choices. For instance, after his two world titles for Renault and half-chances at McLaren (2007) and Ferrari (2010), he did not come close to winning a title again and kept sinking further and further down the rankings. Also for 2023, he makes the remarkable choice to leave the fourth team on the grid for the current number seven in the constructors' championship.

Alonso aims high

Alonso has no shortage of ambition, as when the Spaniard is asked if Aston Martin is capable of finishing ahead of Alpine in 2023, there is no doubt: ''100 per cent,' ' Alonso says according to Speedweek.com. Whereas a fourth-place finish among constructors would not be a new high for the former Force India, Alonso is aiming even higher.

''Aston Martin is not in F1 to finish fifth, sixth or fourth in the constructors' championship. The team is here to win the world title and that is what we are going to try to do in 2023 and 2024.'' The question is whether this does not already set the bar too high. After previous disappointments with Ferrari, McLaren-Honda and a return to Renault, lowering the bar might not be a bad thought.
