The rumours have finally been confirmed: Fred Vasseur will succeed Mattia Binotto as team boss at Ferrari. The Italian racing team previously announced they were parting ways with Binotto and would appoint a successor in the new year. That has already happened.

Vasseur confirmed as new team boss Ferrari

Binotto will step down from his position on 31 December and Ferrari initially did not expect to announce his successor until 2023, but rumours suggested that it would happen before then. This indeed appears to be the case, as the Scuderia has announced before the end of the year that Vasseur will join the team on January 9th of 2023.

Vasseur, who has served as team boss at Alfa Romeo since 2017, thus faces a considerable challenge. The performance pressure is enormous at Ferrari and when the team does not live up to the high expectations, heads usually have to roll. This time it was Binotto who had to pay the price, after the former team boss actually preferred an approach that did not involve apportioning blame.

In a year in which Ferrari repeatedly went wrong with strategic errors, missing out on many points despite the highly competitive F1-75, that approach proved unsuccessful. After a rock-solid start to the 2022 Formula 1 season, things went downhill for the team and it is now up to Vasseur to put things in order.
