Hamilton: 'Red Bull not helping Perez at all'

Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula One world champion, has stood up for Sergio Perez, Max Verstappen's Mexican teammate at Red Bull Racing. The drivers are in Mexico City for the Mexican Grand Prix, Perez's home race.

According to Hamilton, the Red Bull team did not help Perez. Hamilton goes even further by arguing that people within the team have caused Perez mental strain because they did not want Perez to continue driving at Red Bull. Hamilton told Mexican newspaper Esto: "I think his team is not helping him at all. I know that Red Bull is made up of many members, but there are people who affect it psychologically and do not support."

Home race could help

Hamilton added that he would find it very difficult to be in the same position as Perez but that he does think Perez can deal with the situation: "If I heard such negative, it would be very difficult. So he is in a very complicated environment for him, but I think he knows how to deal with it." Hamilton also thinks the home crowd can help Perez recover: "This is a very demanding sport. But what I can highlight most about Sergio Pérez is that he always recovers, gets up and keeps trying. Something I can assure is that Mexico is going to show itself this weekend and maybe that. When I was at Silverstone, I was very motivated, and it will surely be something that will happen to him."

The British superstar goes on to say that he was excited for Perez at the beginning of the year: "I was very excited for him at the beginning of the season because he was driving so well. I thought 'we are finally seeing the best of Checo'. But it is a very long year and a very long season,” Hamilton added.
