Christian Horner shares criticism of race management after Brazil GP

Horner suprised by race director: 'Unsafe and too ambitious'

Everything that could happen did happen at this year's Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The red flag was eventually waved for Franco Colapinto's crash, but Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes that he was suprised the Grand Prix was not stopped earlier because of the weather.

There was heavy rain on Sunday in Brazil, but at least the competitors were able to run after qualifying was delayed from the day before. During the race, there very many incidents, and as the weather situation got worse, the safety car was called out.

At one point, in terms of rain, it got to a point where it was no longer possible to race, so the safety car came out. Yet that still proved not enough, as Franco Colapinto lost control of his car and crashed hard. It was then that race control decided to wave the red flag.

Horner surprised

Horner was surprised by such a late red flag, given how hard it was to see for the drivers and to keep their cars on track. "There were a couple of surprises for me in that race. One was that it wasn't red flagged sooner. There were a lot of drivers that were feeling that the conditions were too unsafe."

"The restarts as well, after effectively an out and an in lap from the safety car when the back of the tail hadn't caught up, it just seemed over ambitious to get the race going again," the team principal explained.
