David Coulthard praises Max Verstappen after Brazil GP

David Coulthard could only praise Max Verstappen's performance at the Brazilian GP. According to the former driver, this was one of the best performances he has ever seen in the competition.

Coulthard: 'That is why I fell in love with F1'

After starting from P17, Max Verstappen managed to win at Interlagos, earning a first victory since the Spanish Grand Prix. On a wet track, at the end of the race, the Dutchman continued to pull away, setting multiple fastest laps in a row. Eventually, he crossed the finish line roughly 20 seconds ahead of Esteban Ocon, who finished second.

"It’s the sort of stuff that when I was reflecting on it, it’s the reason why I think I fell in love with this sport. It was about wanting to see excellence, seeing people doing things that you go, ‘That’s unbelievable’ but it is a fact," Coulthard said in the podcast he co-hosts together with Eddie Jordan, Formula for Success.

Moreover, Coulthard believes Verstappen put in a statement to prove the ones who criticised him wrong. "It probably calmed a lot of the sort of growing sort of finger pointing and frustration or anger, whatever terminology you want to use, that was building towards Max, because he’s his own man, he speaks his mind, he’s not going to dance to anyone’s tune, and that is divisive," he observed.

Thanks to his victory in Sao Paulo, the Dutchman could take an important step towards winning his fourth Formula One title. If Verstappen finishes ahead of Norris in Las Vegas or loses no more than two points to the Brit, he will become the 2024 world champion.
