Earlier on Tuesday, the FIA announced that Niels Wittich, Formula 1 's Race Director this season, was to quit immediately. He was instead set to take up a new challenge. According to Wittich himself, he has not resigned.
Wittich has been the Race Director for Formula 1 since 2022 after Michael Masi left after the 2021 season. Initially, he was with Eduardo Freitas. Since 2023, he's been the sole Race Director in Formula 1.
In a statement, the FIA said: "The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has stepped down from his position as F1 Race Director to pursue new opportunities. Niels has fulfilled his numerous responsibilities as Race Director with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his commitment and we wish him the best for the future."
Wittich denies his resignation:
However, Wittich has since told Motorsport-Magazin: "I have not resigned." According to the German outlet, the Race Director was informed of his resignation just before the FIA released the statement. GPblog asked the FIA for a comment, but the governing body couldn't be reached.
