Liam Lawson has only driven 11 Grands Prix in his career. However, he will be Max Verstappen's teammate at Red Bull from 2025. Not a huge surprise, although these are exciting times for the New Zealander. In a podcast from his new team, Lawson revealed how he learned the news.

Lawson also knew for some time that he was the leading candidate to succeed Sergio Perez at Red Bull Racing. But then again: "Obviously, nothing was like planned or set in stone or anything like that," he told the Talking Bull podcast. "And it's all performance-based, as it always is.

"So they had the meeting, and Christian was kind enough to send me a text, ‘Just a heads up, the meeting was good.’ And then he called me and basically gave me the news. And he gave me the classic one-liner, ‘Welcome to Red Bull Racing.’ It was very exciting to hear over the phone. So yeah, it was cool," Lawson said, looking back on the amazing moment for him.

Lawson's father emotional by his son's news

After Lawson got the huge call from Horner, the first person he video-called was his father. "It was real funny because he sat on it for probably two minutes and I could see he just couldn't really believe it as the same for me. And then probably a delay of two minutes, then he started reacting and he got emotional about it. It was very cool."

Lawson's dad then fetched his mother, who was in another room at the time. She too celebrated, along with the rest of the family, the New Zealander reveals.
