Marko confirms huge sum of money paid by Red Bull to replace Perez
Sergio Perez has had to leave Red Bull Racing after a difficult 2024 season. The Austrian racing stable only had to buy the Mexican out of his contract, with advisor Helmut Marko confirming that this has cost a lot of money.
Sergio Perez was allowed to sign a contract extension midway through this year that would keep him at Red Bull until the end of 2026 after starting the season well with some solid results. However, he was unable to repay the Austrian team with the faith they showed him, struggling to make it out of Q1 multiple times throughout the year, resulting in some very poor performances.
Red Bull pay huge sum to replace Perez
The Mexican struggled with some of his performances in 2023, but Red Bull kept him around and hoped he could turn his form around However, it became worse, and it left the Austrian team with little choice. They came to the conclusion that it was better to let him go, meaning they were required to pay a hefty sum of money.
Speaking to Sport.de, Helmut Marko confirmed that it cost millions to get Perez out of his contract: "We are in Formula 1, so yes," the Austrian said. The Red Bull adviser would not name an amount, but it was acceptable given the contracts, according to him.
