Jos Verstappen warns Red Bull: 'Departure of Max not out of the question'
- Ludo van Denderen
The 2025 season has not yet started, and at Red Bull Racing, the pressure is already on. Jos Verstappen believes that the departure of his son Max Verstappen from the Austrian team is not out of the question. According to the former F1 driver, everything hinges on having a competitive car.
Verstappen senior made his statements in conversation with F1 Insider. Speaking about Max's future, the Dutchman said, "Yes, everything is possible. He can stay at Red Bull if he feels like it. His goal is still to be able to win races. Should he feel that this is no longer possible at Red Bull, a switch [to another team] cannot be ruled out."
Jos Verstappen 'not optimistic' about 2025
Jos Verstappen says it is by no means a certainty that Max will be able to win the world drivers' title for the fifth time in a row in 2025. After saying he doubts title prolongation, Verstappen senior reported, "Red Bull needs to build a car that is easier to predict in all conditions. If you look at the second half of 2024, you cannot be optimistic. Red Bull simply failed to make the car consistently fast. So why should that be the case this year?"
The fact that Red Bull saw a decline in their performance in 2024 was mainly due to the departure of Adrian Newey, according to Jos Verstappen: "The fact is that the car did not improve when he left the team. In particular, the updates no longer worked as desired. I have talked enough about the reasons why the team is in danger of falling apart. Let's leave it at that. One thing is certain: Red Bull has a big challenge ahead of it in 2025."
