Sainz preparing for "second season" in Spain
Carlos Sainz has admitted he’s looking at his home Grand Prix of Spain as a “second season” following the McLaren man’s difficult start to the 2019 season which has seen him pick up just six points so far.
Sainz has retired from two of four races this season and only achieved his first points this year at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with a P7 finish. The Spaniard is currently 12th in the standings, behind his teammate Lando Norris who is in ninth with 12 points.
In an interview on F1only.fr Sainz admitted it’s not uncommon for him to start his “second season” in Spain.
"In Barcelona, I always start a second season,” Sainz said.
“The first four races of the year are usually the first contact.
"Last year, we could only see in Barcelona which teams to beat.
“In addition, all teams bring new pieces, so with the desire to start a second season to set the tone all the rest of the year.
"Barcelona is usually the first race in which you can change the trend of the first four races.
“There will surely be some changes, we just hope that McLaren will get closer to the top of the grid and that Ferrari will get closer to Mercedes.”
