Sebastian Vettel desperately went into turn one: "I had to try something!"

12 May 2019 at 16:47

Sebastian Vettel went all guns blazing into the first corner in an attempt to overtake Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. He was left with a flat spot which caused him to be slow in the following laps.

"I think turn one was the only chance I had to do something about the Mercedes cars: I had to try something. I would not have won the race with it, but I thought: 'maybe this just makes something that makes something else possible'. That is why we had a competition: 'who dares to brake the last'. I think I won that race, but I missed turn one," Seb grins in front of the Ziggo Sport camera.

“After that, I had a huge flat spot around my tire and that stint fell into the water. After that, Max naturally had a good chance on the outside without being able to do anything about it. We were fast in the second stint, but not in the first spot because of the flat spot. Even with the safety car, the difference could not be made: We were fast, but not fast enough."
