Williams believe that the mid-season package update will have a huge bearing on whether they chose the right philosophy change for this season.

Due to delays to the pre-season testing in Barcelona, Williams have been on the back foot ever since. Much like last season, Williams have consequently been towards the back of the grid, but in Monaco and Spain, there were signs of slight improvements for the British side.

Senior race engineer Dave Robson has revealed that the team is planning a major upgrade, with the hopes in the garage that it will provide a "significant" improvements to the FW42's performance.

"Those upgrades when they come will be a big guide to where we really are," Robson said to Autosport. "Coming into this year, we did change the philosophy on the car for good reason.

"Now we need to see whether we are just a little bit behind the curve and can catch up, or actually if we've made mistake and might have to go back (to an alternative philosophy)."

George Russell picked up a P15 finish in Monaco for the former world champions, with team-mate Robert Kubica finishing P18 - the first time all season that the Pole has finished anywhere but rock-bottom of the grid.
