Daniel Ricciardo opens up on Renault's "fundamental issue"
Daniel Ricciardo has admitted that Renault has a "fundamental" problem with their car and thinks that the true performance is yet to be revealed. Renault has taken a backward step since last season and have even seen McLaren, a team that they supply the engine for, perform better than them. This is not what Ricciardo signed up for and he will hope that things start to improve soon.
“I feel like there is maybe something more fundamental with the car that we have not got on top of yet because we have changed a lot and always ended up with the same outcome,” Ricciardo said to the Official F1 Website.
“At the moment there is no concern that what we brought there [Austria] is hurting us,” Ricciardo insisted.
“I will say we did expect a bit more from these upgrades in terms of lap time translation. And that has not really shown.
“It is tough because it was not great and it was quite frustrating in the car, but also just because it is the first time, we haven’t been in Q3 for a while. We have to be constructive and the most important thing is to try to really understand why, as opposed to just throw it away and say that ‘this track does not suit us’.”
Ricciardo hoped to join a Renault team that would be at the top of the midfield battle with the ability to push the top three teams in the seasons to come. This hasn't happened and he will hope the team starts to improve else he will start to seriously question joining the team.
