Pirelli: "It's not fair to change the tyres at this stage"
Mario Isola has insisted that it would be unfair to change tyres halfway through the Formula 1 season. There have been calls from certain teams to return to 2018 tyres or even start using the 2020 tyres earlier than planned.
“Every team receives the same products and service,” Isola told the Dutch publication Formule 1.
“We tested these tyres in Abu Dhabi last year,” Isola insisted. “Everyone was satisfied and we also received no complaints after the winter tests. Even at the first race everything was fine.”
“But after a few races, some people suddenly started saying that the tyres are causing problems,”
“It would not be fair to change the tyres now and therefore favour or disadvantage teams. If new goals are set for next year or 2021, we are happy to take them on but those goals must be set together.
“When I talk to each team individually, it means I am hearing ten different opinions. But we cannot make a separate tyre for each team. They have to be the same for everyone. So we can’t go in a thousand different directions. We have to agree on which way we want to go.”
It seems set that the 2019 tyres will remain in use and teams will have to find other ways of closing the gap to Mercedes.
