Max Verstappen has taken pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix beating out both Mercedes for his maiden Formula 1 pole.

Q1

The big news from Q1 once again came from the Ferrari garage as Charles Leclerc lost control of his car going into the final corner, smashing his rear wing into the barrier bringing a premature end to his Q1. The Monegasque had managed to set a fast enough time to get out of Q1 and his team faced a race against time to replace the damage.

George Russell came close to getting out of Q1 for the first time but was ultimately pipped to it despite out qualifying: Sergio Perez, Daniel Ricciardo, Lance Stroll and, Robert Kubica, his teammate by over one second. Daniel Ricciardo was the biggest casualty in the first session and will start 18th only ahead of Stroll and Kubica.

Max Verstappen topped Q1 beating both Mercedes with Lews Hamilton second and Valtteri Bottas third.

Q2

It was a massively disappointing session for Kevin Magnussen in the Haas as he complained about struggling for grip and exited qualifying 15th. His teammate Romain Grosjean managed to make it to Q3 compounding the Haas driver's misery.

Toro Rosso were the big losers as both their drivers exited during Q2 and they were joined by Nico Hulkenberg and Antonio Giovinazzi.

Hamilton finished the session on top setting a time of 1:15.548 followed by Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas. All three will start on the soft tyres whilst the Ferrari pair who were fourth and fifth will start on the medium tyres.

Q3

Max Verstappen stole the show during Q3 setting a time of 1:14.958 to top the session and set a new track record. He beat out both Mercedes to the delight of the Dutch fans as Bottas came second and Hamilton third.

Ferrari were slightly off the pace at the Hungaroring as they qualified fourth and fifth. McLaren's domination of the midfield continued as they qualified seventh and eighth. Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen will completed the top ten shootout.

However, the day belonged to Verstappen who took his first pole position and became the 100th in the sport's history.
