Williams driver Robert Kubica has said that he “went even slower” after he tried using teammate George Russell’s setup after struggling to match his lap times.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix Williams made a significant step in the performance of their car after Russell nearly made it into Q2 for the first time but started 16thon the grid and then went on to finish ahead of Lance Stroll, Antonio Giovinazzi, Kubica and the retired Romain Grosjean in 16th.

But Kubica could not replicate the same pace as his teammate throughout the weekend despite the upgrades that the team had brought along.

When asked whether this was down to the difference in ability to setup the car the Pole said that they both have it differently but even when trying his teammates setup he felt the pace was worse.

Kubica said to broadcaster Eleven Sports: "We go our own way.

"When I tried to use George's setup, I went even slower. He just has a different feeling in the car.

"He has been happy here, so I hope that when I get a similar feeling in the car, a day will come when I am also happy.

"For now, it's as if we are eating two different dishes.

“One comes from a good restaurant and the other is prepared by myself. And I'm not a very good cook!"

Kubica does have an advantage over Russell in the championship at the moment after being bumped up to 10thplace in the chaotic German Grand Prix, earning him a point for the team.

But this could change as Alfa Romeo are waiting for their appeal hearing.
