Dave Robson explains Kubica's lack of speed
Robert Kubica may have a single point more than his teammate, George Russell but the Williams driver has been considerably off the pace of Russell leading to questions as to why this is. Williams' senior race engineer Dave Robson may have an answer to these questions.
Kubica made a dream return to the pinnacle of motorsport as he was confirmed before the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as one of Williams' driver for the 2019 season. It seemed like a fairytale story but it hasn't panned out that way with Williams way off the pace of the rest of the field and for most of the season Kubica has been behind his rookie teammate.
Kubica did, however, score the team's only points of the season in Germany. After finishing twelfth the Pole benefitted from penalties to both Alfa Romeo drivers to score a solitary point something his teammate cannot boast.
Despite the point at the Hockenheimring, Kubica was at the back, well off the pace at the Hungaroring whereas Russell almost reached Q2. Dave Robson the team's senior race engineer may have an answer for Kubica's considerable lack of pace considering both drivers have the same car.
“I suspect it will come down to the tyres,” said Robson after qualifying in Hungary as quoted by RaceFans.
“When the gaps are that big, the cars are identical, I suspect that’s what it will come down to.”
