BREAKING: Ricciardo excluded from qualifying after running illegal MGU-K!
- Nicolás Quarles van Ufford
Renault star Daniel Ricciardo has been excluded from qualifying on Saturday as the FIA discovered the Aussie was running an illegal MGU-K on his car, which gave the car more than the limit of 120 kW of hybrid power.
Ricciardo originally qualified in eighth but will now be moved to the bottom of the grid, meaning everyone from Nico Hülkenberg up until Robert Kubica will move up a place.
Exceeding the 120 kW you are allowed to feed the hybrid engine basically means you have more power than allowed. The MGU-K harvests keramic energy when the car brakes and transforms this into extra power for the engine. Having more than the legal amount gives a driver, Ricciardo in this instance, an unfair advantage.
Renault appealed the decision when asked about the infringement, but the FIA didn't change its mind and disqualified Ricciardo from qualifying. A massive blow for Renault and their midfield battle with McLaren.
