Vettel voted Driver of the Day in Russia despite retirement!
- Nicolás Quarles van Ufford
Even though his race ended less than halfway in, Sebastian Vettel has been voted Driver of the Day at the Russian Grand Prix for his sensational start and great drive in Sochi before disaster struck.
The German started in P3 but got off the line like a rocket once the lights went out, zooming past Lewis Hamilton in P2 and eventually using the slipstream to get past his teammate Charles Leclerc to lead the race coming out of turn 1.
When it came to the pit stops, Vettel got pitted a few laps later than Leclerc to let the Monegasque back past. This is when disaster struck, as Vettel suffered mechanical issues. His MGU-K first failed and his SF90 then came to a grinding halt, ending his promising race.
Still, for his fiery performance, Vettel has been voted Driver of the Day with 21% of the vote. The smallest of consolations!
