Button on racing Hamilton: "I love racing and you want to do it against the best"
Jenson Button has opened up on what it was like to join Lewis Hamilton at McLaren after winning the World Championship in 2009. Button and Hamilton had some tight battles but the two seem to have a good relationship now.
"It was a strange situation, because I came from Brawn, was world champion, but Mercedes was going to take over and a lot was unclear. Then I got the chance to sign at McLaren, and you can't turn that down. They had a competitive car every year and nobody could have predicted what would happen to Mercedes," said Button to Beyond the Grid.
"I didn't go there to be number two, and they understood that. I would receive the same material and the same treatment. I got the same contract as what Brawn had proposed, so I signed immediately.
"I love racing and you want to do that against the best. It makes no sense to hide. Of course, it was nice to beat Lewis, but as long as it is not about races or titles, it has little impact."
Hamilton has gone on to have great success and Button is glad to see that as it makes his results against him look even more impressive.
