Binotto admits Mercedes got it right and maybe Ferrari should've taken more risks
Mattia Binotto has admitted Mercedes made the right strategy call at the Mexican Grand Prix and although Ferrari could have taken more risks, it is easy to say that in hindsight.
Despite starting third and fifth at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Mercedes went on to win the race with Lewis Hamilton standing on top of the podium with Valtteri Bottas in third. Sebastian Vettel started and finished second giving the Scuderia a consolation.
Once again it was Ferrari's strategy that came into question as tyres didn't degrade as much as originally thought. Binotto admits they could have taken more risk but that it is easy to say that now the race is over.
"Certainly the gamble they [Mercedes] did was the right gamble,” Binotto said on the F1 website.
“They took some risks to win and I think the risk went to their merit. That's the way it is, maybe we should have taken more risks. It's difficult to judge. After the result it's easy to say yes.”
Ferrari's attentions will now turn to Austin and Binotto wants to use the last three races to keep growing. “We need to use the last three races of this season to further develop as a group and to operate in the sharpest possible manner in order to be better prepared for next year. It is a very tight field at the front and every detail matters if we want to win more often. Austin will hopefully give us a good opportunity to do so," Binotto added.
