Giovinazzi celebrates his new F1 contract with his best result of the season
Antonio Giovinazzi recorded his best Formula 1 result after finishing the Brazilian Grand Prix in fifth, one place behind Alfa Romeo teammate Kimi Raikkonen. The Italian had the experienced Daniel Ricciardo breathing down his neck after the final safety car restart but the 25-year-old prevailed.
Early in November, Giovinazzi signed a contract with Alfa Romeo for the 2020 season. The rookie says Sunday's result will help him and the rest of the team celebrate his contract signing in style.
“I am really, really happy today, for both myself and the team. What a great race, it was a fantastic way to celebrate my contract for next year with two cars in the points," Giovinazzi said.
"We had a great start, the best this year – we made up three places and went straight into the top ten, but we still had a lot of work to do. The strategy was great, the restarts were very important, especially the final one when I was under pressure from Daniel [Ricciardo]. The last ten laps were crazy, it was quite intense but we managed to stay ahead."
Alfa Romeo, who are eighth in the F1 world championship, were the second biggest points scorers from the race in Interlagos. Only Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, who won the even, scored more points.
"Everyone in the team did a wonderful job and we can be really happy with our work. We are improving race after race and we can now focus on Abu Dhabi and on finishing the season in the right way," added Giovinazzi.
