Mattia Binotto on Ferrari developing their own DAS system
Mercedes have come into testing with a new Dual Axis Steering (DAS) system and Ferrari are set to ask the FIA for clarification about the device before they then try to design a similar system to use on their own car.
"We are not discussing with the FIA yet," said team boss, Mattia Binotto to PitPass. "But we will do for clarification."
"It is important for us to understand but we will not challenge the FIA on their decision," he added.
"We know very little about it," admitted the team's sporting director, Laurent Mekies. "We expect that the FIA will be a lot more interested than us in dealing with it. We completely rely on the FIA to assess if the system is compliant or not."
When asked if Ferrari would develop their own similar system, the Ferrari boss said they would consider it but it may take a while to implement.
"It will certainly be longer than the first Grand Prix in Melbourne," Binotto said. "It is a first-concept design, production, homologation, it has to be safe. If it is to be made it can't be before mid-season."
It will be interesting to see how much of an impact DAS has and whether other teams will be forced to use it as well just to keep up with Mercedes.
