Williams head of vehicle performance Dave Robson has praised his teams “work ethic” after an oil leak meant a third Mercedes power unit change for the customer in four days.

This time last year Williams endured a disastrous pre-season testing experience after turning up late in the first week but have had a good spell so far with the FW43.

However the Grove-based team have suffered setbacks with engine problems on Thursday and Friday in the first week, and again Wednesday.

An oil leak to Nicholas Latifi’s car caused him to stop on track, which lead to a third change of the Mercedes power unit in four days.

“Unfortunately, the morning was cut short by a PU oil system issue, requiring us to fit another new PU ready for George [Russel]'s running in the afternoon,” said Robson.

“Once George began his running the conditions were not as favourable as in the morning, and so we were able to spend some time understanding the behaviour of the car in the sort of conditions that we will face throughout the season.

“By the end of the afternoon we had made good progress and were able to spend the final 15 minutes completing pit stop practice.”

Despite the engine issues hampering time on the track for Russell and Latifi, Robson happy with the dedication the team had to compile over 100 laps.

“Although parts of the day were frustrating, we nonetheless completed some very useful work, which sets us up nicely for the final two days of winter testing,” he added.

“The fact that we managed over 100 laps, despite changing drivers and the PU, is testament to both the dedication and work ethic of our mechanics, but also the current nature of Formula One generally."
