Pirelli has to change plans: "That'll happen sometime next year now"
- GPblog.com
Pirelli was originally supposed to supply 18-inch tyres to Formula 1 from 2021 onwards, but because the new regulations have been postponed to 2022, 13-inch tyres will continue to be used in the royal class of motorsport next year.
Pirelli's contract with Formula 1 runs until 2023, which means that the Italian tyre supplier will have to develop a whole new tyre for possibly only two seasons. Indeed, there is a chance that in 2024 it will work with another tyre supplier in Formula 1. This makes it quite an expensive affair for the Italians.
Nevertheless, Pirelli supports the decision of Formula 1 to postpone the new rules by one year. A spokesman in conversation with Racefans.net says: “We will work together with all the parties involved to identify the best approach from now on."
Testing again in a year's time
Testing of the 18-inch tyres had already started, but the second test, initially scheduled for March 5, is now being carried forward to next year. "Testing on 18-inch tyres will now happen during 2021", reports Pirelli, without giving a date and location.
