Juan Manuel Correa announces that he is aiming for a return to racing in 2021. The driver became involved in the horrific accident in which Anthoine Hubert was killed. Correa himself fought for three weeks for his life.
Dark day
It was a very sad day on 31 August 2019. In the second round of the Formula 2 feature race at Spa-Francorchamps things went wrong on top of the Eau Rouge. Hubert lost control of the wheel and crashed into the piles of tyres, which threw him back onto the track in the path of Juan Manuel Correa. Hubert did not survive the accident. Correa had to fight for weeks for his life in the hospital.
Go racing again
It's now eight months later and Correa wants to start racing again. The 20-year-old American hopes to be fully recovered next year. "I bluntly asked them when I could race again", says Correa in an ESPN podcast. "They said, not in the next two years. That was in November. When I look at my recovery, I'm not going to drive this November, but probably early next year."
"It only took me a few days to realize that I wouldn't lose my love of racing so easily", says Correa. "I needed the challenge to motivate myself and start the long journey ahead of me."
