Schumacher to Formula 1 in 2020? "Well, if Giovinazzi keeps making mistakes''
- GPblog.com
Mick Schumacher is one of the main candidates to start the 2021 Formula 1 season as a rookie. As the son of the legendary Michael, Mick is one step ahead of the rest and that may pay off in 2020.
Schumacher to Formula 1
Schumacher has already made an impression in the junior categories. For example, he won the Formula 3 championship and previously he was runner-up in the Formula 4 championship. In 2019 he drove in Formula 2 and finished twelfth in the standings with one victory behind his name. So no big resume, but the name Schumacher does help of course.
As a member of the Ferrari juniors programme Schumacher will be in the spotlight in 2020. A title in Formula 2 could almost certainly earn him a spot at Alfa Romeo in 2021. That's where Kimi Raikkonen faces his retirement and Antonio Giovinazzi is not always convincing either.
Opportunities in 2020
''The Schumacher family of course knows very well what is the best choice for Mick'', says Nick Heidfeld to Sky Germany. However, where everyone is gambling on 2021, Heidfeld and an acquaintance of Schumacher are convinced that there could be a chance for Mick in Formula 1.
''Kimi almost ends his career and Antonio is not too strong. So I think that Mick certainly has a chance for a seat," says uncle Ralf Schumacher. Heidfeld is happy with that. ''I wouldn't be surprised if we see Mick in the car of Alfa Romeo in 2020. If he does well in Formula 2 and Antonio makes even more mistakes than in 2019, it wouldn't be weird if he gets the chance halfway through the season'', concludes Heidfeld.
