Webber about Alonso: "I'd be surprised if he comes back"

Since the departure of Daniel Ricciardo at Renault, there have been many rumours about the possible return of Fernando Alonso to the French team. The driver who won the world championship with Renault in 2005 and 2006 would have a good chance of a possible return. Mark Webber, however, estimates the chances of the Spaniard to be small.
"I'd be surprised at his return. We know that Fernando is very good and that he has had an incredible career. But we also know that he is no longer at his best level. It will be difficult to do the same as in the past", Webber said to the F1 Nation Podcast. Webber doesn't expect that Alonso can get back the feeling of performing at maximum level.
He has to find motivation
"If he's gonna sign a long-term contract, I'm not saying he can't. However, I think it will be difficult for him to keep the motivation to drive for two to three years". Alonso left Formula 1 in 2018 because he lacked the motivation to continue in midfield. He went looking for success in other racing classes, which he found at the WEC.
Webber may be negative about Alonso, but also has respect for him. "Still he is on the level to be good for the team and someone who can motivate a team". It is important that he performs. "He left Formula 1 because of the lack of motivation, because he couldn't fight for podiums", Webber concludes.
