Probably the most sensational development during the winter test in Barcelona was the so-called Mercedes DAS system. The team could count on a lot of patting on the back after the unveiling of this innovation, but it remains to be seen whether we will see it again this year.

Thanks to the DAS system, Mercedes drivers can adjust the position of their front wheels while driving by pulling the steering wheel towards them. This makes it possible to achieve a higher top speed on the straights, but it could also help warm up the tyres.

DAS system already banned after 2020

Mercedes itself has indicated several times in recent months that it is not sure whether they will use the DAS system this season. What is already certain is that it will be forbidden to use it from 2021 onwards. Direct competitor Red Bull Racing has been vehemently opposed to the presence of this system from the very first moment.

According to them, Mercedes is in violation of the regulations that say that you may not adjust the position of the suspension while driving. In any case, Auto Motor und Sport says that the team has announced an official protest to the FIA prior to the Austrian Grand Prix.
