Because the coronavirus has turned the current season upside down and the factories of the F1 teams were closed for a long time, the introduction of the new regulations has been postponed for one season. However, this does not mean that the teams have not already started the preparations.

"The regulations forbid us to work on the aerodynamics of the 2022 car until the beginning of next year, but that doesn't mean we can't work on the 2022 project at all. After all, the regulations have been published and there are plenty of challenges that are not aerodynamic in nature", says James Allison on the Youtube channel of Mercedes.

Biggest changes since 2014

The fact that F1 teams are working far ahead of the rest of the team is evident in the next addition. "We have been working on this for months and will continue to do so for the rest of this year. Once it is 2021, the most important challenge will be added: The aerodynamic program."

The changes to the regulations for 2022 are the biggest since 2014. Back then, it was the power source that was completely new. Motor-wise the cars remain the same, but the whole aerodynamic package is tackled. So what Mercedes has already started will be fairly limited in nature.
