Wolff looks at Hülkenberg: "A German driver is always interesting"

Despite the fact that Nico Hülkenberg was unable to race on Sunday, he left a good impression with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. According to Wolff, Hülkenberg has shown a solid weekend and it may also be interesting to hire the German as a reserve driver.

Reserves for Mercedes

Mercedes already has two reserve drivers to hand: Stoffel Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez. Both could not race this weekend for Racing Point, who share their reserve drivers with Mercedes. Vandoorne had obligations in Formula E and Gutierrez no longer has a super license.

Hülkenberg was solid

Hülkenberg was therefore called up by Racing Point and Wolff also kept a close eye on the former Renault driver: “What he delivered on Friday was really solid. And also on Saturday within expectations. I think he sold it very well. If you have not been in the car for nine months, it is a very solid performance,” says Wolff according to Motorsport-Total.com.

Wolff says he is sorry that Hülkenberg did not get a chance to race on Sunday. “I'm sorry he didn't drive. He is a good candidate anyway. A German driver can always be an interesting idea. Also as a reserve driver. But I think we should just look at the situation around the world. What do we want to achieve next year with our driver line-up? Can just be a candidate,” Wolff concludes.
