Robert Shwartzman is one of the many Ferrari juniors in Formula 2 fighting for a place in Formula 1 in 2020. As a Ferrari junior, Shwartzman will be driving in the red colours and the Ferrari management will be cheering for him if he wins. A special feeling for the still young Russian.
Shwartzman in the Ferrari colours
Robert Shwartzman started his Formula 2 campaign strong and quickly took the lead in the championship. The Rookie then dipped in the midseason and now has to put up with Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Christian Lundgaard. Lundgaard is the Rookie of Renault, but Schumacher and Ilott also drive for the Ferrari programme.
''Of course, it has something special to be able to drive with the prancing horse on his chest in the red shirt. From the first conversation with the Ferrari academy to the moment we really started working together, that was very important to me. You really become part of the Ferrari family and that's an honour," says Shwartzman to Bild.
Visit of Ferrari summit
With three victories and two more visits to the podium, Shwartzman is doing well in his first season in Formula 2. The Russian will hope for a place at Alfa Romeo or Haas, but the competition is huge. However, he will be seen by Ferrari's leadership, as they will be below the podium if he wins again.
''Of course, he was very happy about that. It's great to see Mattia Binotto and Laurent Mekies standing there. We gave each other a box, I used to box with my father, but now I do it with the whole team'', concludes the 20-year-old Prema driver who lost his father to the coronavirus in 2020.
