Valtteri Bottas was fastest during the first free practice in Russia. It was a session with a lot of spins and crashes. Latifi's crash even caused a short red flag.

Valtteri Bottas was again the fastest in FP1. The Finn set a time of 1:34.923 on the soft tyre. After him was Daniel Ricciardo of Renault, a great achievement for the Australian. Verstappen followed in P3. The Dutchman was more than six tenths slower than Bottas. Both Racing Points also did well, Perez and Stroll were in P4 and P5. Alex Albon got stuck in P8, behind Esteban Ocon who finished in P6 and Daniil Kvyat in P7. Vettel and Gasly completed the top ten.  Lewis Hamilton ended in P19, but he did not drive a good competitive lap.
