This weekend we are going to the circuit of Portimao for the first time, but it is not the first time that the Grand Prix of Portugal will be held. We were last there 24 years ago and here's what Formula 1 looked like then.

Williams in the lead

When F1 arrived in 1996 for the last Portuguese Grand Prix, it was Williams who were on top. In 1994 Damon Hill won the race and in 1995 it was David Coulthard.

Portugal was the 15th and therefore penultimate Grand Prix of 1996. Only the Japanese Grand Prix comes after Portugal and so Hill had the opportunity to take the title with a win. But it was his teammate Jacques Villeneuve who won ahead of the Brit, forcing the championship to move on to Japan, where Hill won the race and the title.

Michael Schumacher came third for Ferrari, with Jean Alesi, Eddie Irvine and Gerhard Berger also making the points.
