Mercedes took their seventh consecutive world title in Imola. Ross Brawn is amazed by the continuous strong performance of the German team. Especially Lewis Hamilton showed in Italy why he is a champion, according to Brawn.

Hamilton a great champion

Mercedes AMG F1 won the manufacturer's title for no less than seven years in a row. With this number they break the Scuderia Ferrari record. Ross Brawn himself was involved in this record because he still played a prominent role at Ferrari at the time, but can now only be in awe of Toto Wolff and his team.

On the track, Brawn's eye was mainly on Hamilton. In his column on Formula1.com the Briton writes: "The great world champions win races they shouldn't win. Lewis' race on Sunday at Imola was the perfect demonstration of that. It's bad luck that Valtteri had a problem, but you have to be there to take advantage of such situations."

Mercedes made an interesting choice

So Hamilton was lucky because Bottas had damage and Max Verstappen had a flat tyre. Yet the Brit pulled the race to himself when he asked if he could extend his first stint. "He clearly judged he had enough tyre left, they didn't see that clearly on the pit wall."

Brawn continues: "While the team were balancing fairly between their drivers, they also wanted to beat Verstappen. Valtteri's damage was an important factor. I think they did the right thing. And although Valtteri might feel aggrieved, he won't feel too sore about it."
