Horner happy with Ferrari support: "encouraging to hear"
Although Ferrari first opposed Red Bull's idea of freezing engine development after 2021, that now seems to have changed. Ferrari have expressed support for the plan, which is good news for Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri. Honda will leave the sport after the 2021 season.
Positive for Formula 1
Christian Horner tells Sky Sports F1 that he is happy with the support of Ferrari. "I think that is positive news. I think that it is positive news for Formula 1. All the manufacturers and all the CEOs of the Automotive industry they all recognise that the investment cost of these engines particularly with the new technology coming for 2026 maybe 2025," Horner said.
The freezing of the engines seems to be a step closer thanks to the support of Ferrari. "It doesn't make sense to keep investing your 100s of millions of dollars in these engines. So to freeze... the only thing you have to do with a freeze is that there has to be some kind of mechanism that if someone has undershot over the winter or wants to in the season they would have the ability to correct that. Otherwise you are locking in a disadvantage," he added.
Encouraging to hear
"From a cost point of view and from a team point of view it's a very positive thing. One would have thought that for Renault it would be completely logical as well but we'll see. It's encouraging to hear Ferrari are backing that position."
