16-year-old Maya Weug's victory in the FIA Girls on Track Programme has earned her a spot at the prestigious Ferrari Driver Academy and with it a spot in the 2021 Formula 4 Championship.
Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto spoke highly of the Dutchman on Ferrari's website, who is the first female driver ever to join the Ferrari Driver Academy.
First female driver at Ferrari Academy
"This is a key moment in the history of Scuderia Ferrari and its Academy. Thanks to the collaboration with the FIA in the Girls on Track: Rising Stars program, for the first time a female driver will join the Ferrari Driver Academy.
"Maya Weug will compete in a Formula 4 championship, which is considered the first step in single-seaters on the road to Formula 1."
Marco Matassa, boss of the Ferrari Driver Academy, is also pleased with Weug's arrival. "We are delighted to welcome Maya to the Academy. We are impressed by her dedication and preparation, both physically and in her attitude. Despite her little experience in a single-seater, she had good control of the car right away and was well able to apply instructions."
