Tost emphatically rules out any future Renault return

The partnership between Red Bull Racing and Honda will end at the end of this year and the decision has already caused the Austrian team some headaches. Not only does the big Red Bull need an engine for next season, but sister team Alpha Tauri also needs a power unit to race under the new regulations in 2022. The Italian's team boss expects Honda and Red Bull to come to a solution together.
With the departure of Honda, three engine suppliers will remain on the F1 grid in 2022, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Renault. Renault only has its own team to supply engines to, while Ferrari have three teams under its care and Mercedes supplies the engine to four teams. If Honda and Red Bull can't work it out together, it might be difficult for Max Verstappen's team in the future.
No Renault for AlphaTauri?
Because, according to the rules, Renault has to supply engines to Red Bull because the French team now has no customer teams. That scenario must be avoided according to Franz Tost. "Renault is a factory team. I cannot imagine that we are going to get a power unit that we can actually be competitive with in the races. You have to take into account that Red Bull and Diedtrich Mateschitz have other requirements," Tost explained in a conversation with Motorsport-Magazin.
"They want to fight for the world championship and they need the right equipment to do that. A Renault in the back of the Red Bull will not be seen any time soon and if it is up to Tost, Red Bull and Honda will find a solution together. "It will be very difficult without a power unit," Tost said, referring to the fact that a solution must and will be found.
